Reason For 1. FSV Mainz 05 VS Hertha Berlin Betting Tips
Mainz 05 have well and truly been dragged into the relegation fight. Last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat on the road to the home-strong Freiburg marked their fifth consecutive Bundesliga defeat – the first time this has happened under current coach Martin Schmidt – and recent defeats against the bottom two (Darmstadt 98 and FC Ingolstadt) bring Mainz’s and Schmidt’s future in the Bundesliga into question.
At the other end of the table, Hertha Berlin’s search for European football was given a much needed, and well deserved boost, last weekend. Following consecutive defeats against Cologne, Hoffenheim and Borussia M’gladbach, the Berliners’ 2-0 win at home to strugglers Augsburg put an end to their three match win-less streak and three points within the top 6. Pal Dardai’s side don’t hold the most stellar away record in the Bundesliga – the 3rd worst in the German top tier (W2 D3 L9) – but he should fancy his chances here against strugglers Mainz 05.
Mainz 05 are the favourites here at 5/4 with bet365, but we feel that the visitors represent the value here. Hence, backing Hertha Berlin or draw at 4/6 should be the best bet here for the following reasons: though Hertha Berlin head into this off the back of seven consecutive away defeats – their worst ever run on the road in the Bundesliga- their poor form is not without reason. Like Hertha themselves, the sides which the Berliners have faced over their last seven away (RB Leipzig, Schalke, Cologne, M’gladbach . . . ) are also extremely strong on their own turf. Mainz, however, do not fall into the same category. Mainz have struggled since the turn of 2017, winning just two of their twelve Bundesliga matches so far (17%), and the 05ers have been hugely inconsistent at the Opel Arena in general, losing or drawing in 65% of their matches at home – a perfect opportunity for Hertha to improve on their weak record.
Most notably, Hertha are Mainz’s “bogey side”. Hertha have lost just once on the road to Mainz over the prior 14 meetings between them (W4 D7 L1) = win or draw rate of 93%. The 05ers have won more often against Bayern Munich (2) than Hertha on their own turf!
Regarding a correct score bet, a balance between Mainz’s overall poor form and Hertha’s weaker performances on the road should see this end deadlocked. With both teams scoring in 64% of Mainz’s home matches, we feel that a 1-1 draw at 5/1 with bet365 is a decent shout here.
